  • Jon Malis first picked up a camera at age six when he won it in a raffle from a local camera store.
  • He took his first formal photography class in high School, then took art classes while at George Washington University. He had intended to major in International studies or political science, was unable to register for the classes, and, by his sophomore year, changed his major to studio art/photography.
  • He worked as a photography intern at the Andover Townsman.
  • In 2003 he moved to Washington, D.C. He is an adjunct faculty member of the American Unitersity's School of Communication/Film and Media Arts. He calls himself a "recovering newspaper photojournalist" as he works as an artist, filmmaker, cinematographer and commercial/editorial photographer.
  • He was the winner of the second annual Camera USA:National Photography exhibition and Award 2012. One juror praised Malis as a photographer "who, instead of filling in the margins of our history books, is choosing to turn the page and help write a new chapter in photography."
