In December 2001 in a ceremony in Boston Harbor four Andover World War II Veterans were decorated with a "special diploma" by the French government for their valor in Normandy on D Day. The award was given by the French Consul General and the commanding officer of the "Jeanne D'Arc", a French ship that fought along side the American ships. Recipients:

  • Louis Heliotis, High Street
  • Domenic Mariano, North Main Street
  • Mario Medaglio, Newman Hill Road
  • Oscar Rosenberg, Railroad Avenue

Ted Cole was honored in May 2004 by the Town of Andover. Ted was serving as a gunner on the USS Columbia when it was hit by a Japanese Kamakaze bomber. When Ted received medical attention he was holding a piece of the Kamakaze pilot's jacket in his hand, which had a piece of a Japanese flag in the pocket.
