Samuel Francis Smith was born on October 21, 1808 in Boston, Massachusetts and died on November 16, 1895. In 1832, while a student at the Andover Theological Seminary, he wrote the words to "America" using a German "patriotic tune". Because he was at his home on 147 Main Street when he wrote the tune, that house became known as the "America House".
