The Ballardvale Stoneware Manufacturing Company was founded in 1880 by Lewis Willard of Boston, later joined by Jeremiah Sullivan. The company handpainted blue docorations on their jugs and crocks, which bear inscriptions such as "Willard and Sons" and "Ballardvale Stoneware Manufacturing Company". The business moved to Lawrence, MA in 1892.
