Martha Carrier, known as the "Queen of Hell", was one of fifty Andover residents hanged as a witch during the Salem Witch Trials.  She was accused by Benjamin Abbot and hanged on August 16, 1692. It was thought that she brought the first case of smallpox to Andover.
