Pierce, Benjamin (son of President Franklin Pierce)

President Franklin Pierce,the fourteenth president of the United States, visited the Central Street Andover home of his sister-in-law frequently. It was leaving such a visit after the winter holiday of 1852 that his son Benjamin was killed when the train they were riding in toppled down a hill after leaving Shawsheen Village Station on January, 6, 1853. The family was headed to Concord New Hampshire. Benjamin was twelve years old.
