Andover Biography - Charlotte Helen Abbott
Charlotte Helen Abbott, was born in Andover in 1844. [1] [2] She was a member of the Punchard High's first graduating class in 1859. She worked as a teacher in Ipswich and Concord, MA. Miss Abbott was a dressmaker, but her real love was documenting the families of early Andover history. [3] For 30 years she wrote a column in the Andover Townsman;[4] some of these articles have been added to the Andover Massachusetts page on the Essex County USGenWeb Project. See the link below. She also wrote for The Boston Transcript and The Portland Argus. [5] Below is a list containing the dates that her column appeared in the Townsman. Upon her death in 1921, Miss Abbott left all of her books to Memorial Hall Library, an institution she visited nearly every day. [6] [7] Her funeral was at South Church in Andover and she is buried in the cemetery there. Her Punchard High classmates published a tribute to her in the Andover Townsman about six months after her death noting her varied interests and ample contributions to the community, [8] [9] Miss Abbott was an active member of the Andover Natural History Society who honored her with a 75th birthday celebration in 1920. [10]
She authored the Abbott Genealogies ,a compiled genealogy of the first Andover families. A copy of the multi-volume set is kept in the Andover Room at Memorial Hall Library was typed by Marion LeMere in 1934 as part of a local Emergency Relief Administration funding In January 1936, The Boston Transcript announced a Works Progress Administration Project for fifty "white collar" workers to index forty years of genealogical columns of the newspaper including the contributions of Charlotte Helen Abbott.
