Pfizer Inc.'s Andover facility played a critical role in the development of the first mRNA vaccines in 2020.
In July 2020, Pfizer's Andover facility began mass manufacturing the RNA required for the mRNA vaccine it co-developed with the German pharmaceutical firm, BioNTech. Sold under the brand name Comirnity, the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine production and trials were sped up and scaled up to meet the urgent demands of a private-public partnership initiated by the US government which enabled special fast-tracked government approval of vaccines under trail.
