A mural of General Lafayette greeting the people of Andover was painted by local Andover artist, William Abbott Cheever (1907-1986), in 1956. The mural was restored in 1994. Owned by the Andover Historical Society, it is on loan to the town and on display in the selectman's meeting room in the town offices.
Artist Cheever worked as a portrait painter, illustrator and muralist. He was also an alumni of and studio instructor at Phillips Academy. The mural is 41 1/2" x 89 1/2".
