George Street III, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, was the commander of the USS Tirante in World War II. The movie Run Silent, Run Deep, was based on his war experiences.

On March 27, 2000 the United States Post Office dedicated commemorative stamps for U.S. Navy submarine commanders. In recognition of Captain Street's extraordinary service, the Andover postmaster presented Captain Streets family with the stamps in September 2000.

The Greenwood Street Bridge over Route 93 was renamed and dedicated to Captain Street on November 19, 2000.
