Doherty Junior High School opened in 1982 at 36 Bartlet St., in the former Central Elementary School building.

The central section of the building, which included the Memorial Auditorium and gymnasium, was connected to the new Doherty Junior High in 1982 and remained in use for school-related activities.

In 1988, the school was renamed Doherty Middle School.[1]
