On April 17, 1986, Gene Durand was paralyzed when a nail from a stud gun hit him in the neck as he was getting a haircut in the barbershop in Shawsheen Square. The nail was accidentally shot through the wall by a worker in a business next door.

In April of 1988, there was a 15 million dollar settlement for the accident.
