According to Bridget Bennett, former Coordinator of Children's Services at Memorial Hall Library, the pen in ink drawing of Samuel Whiskers was donated to the library in the early 1980's by former MHL Director Miriam Putnam. Beatrix Potter sold pen and ink drawings through the Children's Book Shop in Boston to raise money to bring her nephews from England during World War II. Miss Putnam had worked there.
