The Shawsheen Elementary School, which had been used as administrative offices, was converted into an early childhood center in 1983.

Due to budget constraints the Early Childhood Center closed at the end of the school year in June 1990. Beginning in September 1991 kindergarten students attended their neighborhood schools.
