On May 11, 1978, two single-engine Cherokee airplanes collided at 4pm above the Hayden Scofield Playfield. James Shaddox, of Lowell, and student pilot James Lucas, of Tewksbury were in one airplane and Steven M. Manupelli, of Everett, was the pilot of the other airplane. Both planes had just taken off. All three were killed.

Debris was scattered over a large area crashing into homes, but luckily no one else was hurt.
