William M. Wood, Jr., son of American Woolen Company owner William M. Wood, Sr., was killed in an automobile accident on August 15, 1923. Wood Jr. was driving his Rolls Royce, possibly racing another car, along Route 28, heading from Reading to Andover. Wood, and one of his passengers, World War I hero Major Alexander Gardner, were killed in the crash.

Wood, Jr. graduated from Harvard in 1915 and worked for his father, eventually serving on the board of directors. He was married to Edith Goldsborough Robinson.
