1902 saw 8 cases of smallpox break out in the Welch family and spread to the Collins family. Their homes were quarantined. Watchmen were stationed both day and night at the quarantined homes. Many places in town were fumigated, including Mr. Welch's store and St. Augustine's church. The Board of Health ordered compulsory vaccinations for the town.
