  • Anita Brown grew up in Andover in the 1970's when J. Everett Collins still showed up every day to lead rehearsals at Andover High, where she graduated in 1977 and won the only music scholarship and the "most musical" title.

  • She earned a bachelor's degree in music at the University of New Hampshire and a master's in music education at Herbert H. Lehman College in New York.

  • She taught choral singing and other music courses at public and private schools until 1995.

  • In 1995 she decided to leave teaching to compose music and lead a jazz band. The 17 member Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra came out with their first CD, 27 East, in August 2003.

  • The Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra was nominated for six Grammy Awards in 2004.
